The Val di Cornia district, thanks to its fertile plains, gentle hills and nearby sea is often called "the Garden of Tuscany". The Val di Cornia district covers an area that stretches from the Tyrrhenian Sea, to the Gerfalco hills, the town of San Vincenzo and the hills that separate the Livorno and Grosseto plains. The cultivation of vines in this district began way back in Etruscan times when it is believed that the entire valley was covered in long lines of vines. In fact, the Etruscan influence in the region is so strong that it is known as the "Costa degli Etruschi" and the same name has been given to the local wine route - "la Strada del Vino" that passes by or close to many Etruscan remains. Thousands of years later, wine is still of vital importance to the district and the reputation, both at home and abroad, of wines and other by products is going from strength to strength; in fact in 1989 Val di Cornia wine was awarded DOC status (controlled denomination of origin). The town of San Vincenzo has become the tourist center of this district, known for its pleasant, tranquil atmosphere and wonderful beaches - awarded the coveted European Blue Flag in 2006 in recognition of the unpolluted quality of the beaches and seashore. The history of San Vincenzo goes back centuries but at one point in the past, the local feudal lords decided to divide their lands between local sharecroppers, making them freeholders of the land they worked. This effectively freed the croppers from their feudal obligation and enabled them to lead an independent existence. San Vincenzo is the perfect place for a holiday, whatever it is that you enjoy!
